I'm very happy to announce that I have a "new" short story out in Issue #12 of the fine Canadian speculative fiction magazine, Pulp Literature. The gorgeous cover can be seen at the side here.

My story is called "The Last of a Thing" and is high fantasy. I purposely play around with the tropes and cliches of that genre to tell a tale whose message is...well, I'll let you read it, but let's just say this little story shares a heart with my novel The Wolf at the End of the World.

Why the quotes around "new"? Well, although the story has never been published before (so it will be new to any of my readers), I had actually sold it a couple of times in the past.  However, it never managed to see the light of publication until now. Every time I sold it, the magazine would fold or the anthology would never be published.

Yes, this was my "market killer" story. Every short story writer, if they've been doing this long enough, has one of these—a story that seems cursed to take down any market that dares to try to publish it.

So I'm very glad that (a) the story has finally really sold and is now available for you to read, and (b) I didn't end up killing a fine Canadian magazine.

On Wednesday, October 19, Toronto Public Library's Albert Campbell Branch is hosting a monthly Local Authors Night, an evening for book lovers: readers, writers, and everyone in-between. I'll be one of five local writers speaking at the event:

We'll each be talking about our writing, giving a short reading, and then answering questions from resident librarian Maria Samurin and the audience. After, we'll all be there to chat with. Books will also be available for purchase and signing. The event starts at 6:30pm and runs to 8:00pm.

I hope if you're in the area that night, you'll drop by to listen and talk with us.

I'll be one of six authors appearing at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Library (2 Park Drive, Stouffville, ON) for the inaugural Indie Author Day on Saturday, October 8.

Indie Authors Day is a North American event in which "libraries from all across Canada and the US will host their own local author events with the support of the Indie Author Day team. In addition to these local programs, each library’s indie community will come together for an hour-long digital gathering at 2 pm Eastern featuring Q&A with writers, agents and other industry leaders."

I'm a hybrid author, with a traditional publishing short fiction career with my stories and collections, but also an indie career with my first novel, THE WOLF AT THE END OF THE WORLD, and my writer's guide, PLAYING THE SHORT GAME. I'm thrilled to be invited to participate in this event, and in my own home of York Region.

Here's the schedule for the day:

1:00-2:00 pm: Panel with the Writers’ Community of York Region

2:00-3:00 pm: Digital panel, streamed and projected

3:00-5:00 pm: Open house with the writers, including short readings and a chance to buy books and get them signed.

Tell us about your latest novel.

Future Imperfect is an exciting technology-driven adventure featuring teenage geniuses, corporate espionage, and mysterious messages. In the novel, we’re introduced to Andrew Mitchell, who was one of the leading experts in highly advanced technology in Silicon Valley, until he vanished following a car accident, which also injured his son, Alex. When a mysterious app later appears on Alex’s phone, he and his friend Stephanie embark on a terrifying journey involving secret technology, corporate espionage, kidnapping, and murder in a desperate bid to save the future from the sinister Veronica Castlewood.

This sounds very exciting. Why do you think kids will enjoy Future Imperfect?

The story will appeal to all young readers for whom technology plays such a large role in their lives, whether it’s cell phones, laptops, tablets, gaming, or the online world, but it’s also a very compelling adventure story, with lots of cliffhangers, twists, and turns. There might even be a couple of sequels, but we’ll wait and see what the future holds, I guess.

I'm doing a bunch of panels, one reading, giving a workshop on marketing and selling short fiction, and also will be one of the presenters at the Aurora Awards ceremony.

My short story "The Walker of the Shifting Borderland," which won Canada's Aurora Award in 2013, has been translated and reprinted in the Estonian magazine, Reaktor. That is the thirty-second country and twenty-sixth language in which my work has been published. If you can read Estonian, you can check out the story here.

A new interview with me is up at Festivale, an online arts and entertainment magazine created in Melbourne, Australia. The magazine has a long-running interview series called "The Usual Questions" that they've been asking of writers and other artists since they began the concept at the 1999 WorldCon in Melbourne, Australia.

The questions are always the same:

• Has your interaction with fans, for example, at conventions, affected your work?
• Is there any particular incident (a letter, a meeting, a comment that stands out?
• Do you have a favourite author or book (or writer or film or series) that has influenced you or that you return to?
• Who is the person you would most like to be trapped in a lift (elevator) with? or a spaceship?
• Who is the person you would most DISlike to be trapped in a lift with? Or a spaceship?
• What would you pack for space? (Is there a food, beverage, book, teddy bear, etc that you couldn't do without?)
• What is the most important thing you would like to get/achieve from your work?

I'd posted earlier that my Aurora Award winning story, "Scream Angel," was to be translated and reprinted in the Austrian magazine, Visionarium.

That issue (#6) is out, and my SF tale can now be read in German, alongside stories by Justin Isis, which received praise from none other than Thomas Ligotti, and a graphic novel adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's "The Music of Erich Zann." Very cool to be sharing a Table of Contents with the likes of those writers.
